Cellscope is a good idea and have its use. We need to explore its other use. I believe there will be more application than malaria alone.

Gil,

I'm happy to hear about your work in the Philippines - I agree with current tools we can eliminate malaria in similar settings and the largest bottleneck is in the challenge you mention in the lack of experienced control staff and program management capacity.

Look forward to reading your posts,

Innovations are out there in field. They are in the minds of experienced field workers, not in the laboratory nor in the confines of the office. Field conditions differ from experimental condition. It will fail the rigidity required by scientific investigations.
Strenghtening monitoring and evaluation will identify these practices. Most of them will surely pass the rigors of field condition. The day to day solution to the surfacing problem. Malaria armament for elimination is available. The required skill to use them properly is sorely inadequate. Experience malariologist like Allan Shafira has to be cloned.
I am going to write my experience in my blogsite http://malariaelimination.blogspot.com that was just created. You will get interested about the innovations made that helped eliminate malaria in our province at least. One entry was already posted and several more will follow. The future topics are malaria dynamics, Malaria Transmission Scoring System, stratification and many more. They are result of my 2 decades of experience in the field of malaria control program.
The exploraton challenge will be able to identify more innovations like this if this information reached the malaria field workers which most of the time are in areas beyond the reach of internet.
Let's eliminate malaria once and for all. It is attainable given the huge amount of resources available today. Use them efficiently.

Would it be wrong to have an outsider do the job for RBM? Will it promise success? I all as it will work it is fine. Nowadays business process outsourcing is the trend. End result will give justice to the means. Let's wait and see.

Rukhsana,

that's a great point - its always a challenge to translate direct media to direct imapct (but I would argue that this need not be a goal).

First, I think there is inherent and sufficient value in spreading knowledge itself. Learning about the lives of others (from all areas and walks of life), helps us understand and frame our own lives better.

In terms of impact on the populations in malarious regions - that's harder, but awareness of the disparity is a start.

Naman, I am impressed on how you keep up with news on malaria. Indeed if the malaria episode looks anything like the preview it is likely to help a section of the public become more aware of the problem of malaria. However this raises the question on how it may help to have any impact on the needy population in the malarous regions of the world?

Saket,

great point, it is also an effective way for RBM to avoid arm wrestling, both internally and with all the groups they consulted for the plan's development.

Good observation. I can't say that I'm too surprised about why the group brought in BCG (not that I'm qualified to say ANYTHING about the group). But that's the role these management consulting firms play for all kinds of businesses. These consultants think strategy all the time -- and they are armed with the collective experience of interacting with so many kinds of businesses in all kinds of situations. Just like any firm, I'm sure internal politics play an unfortunate role and it seems unlikely to me that an internal strategy team would be immune to such influences. So there's another advantage of bringing in an outside group.

But I'm really pleased to see this new push for malaria. Let's knock it out of the park (for real)
